F I L M, from a digital perspective

I took up photography in 2014 with the purchase of my very first camera, a Canon T5i.  I had shot disposable film cameras before, but I was merely a kid taking snapshots rather than making photographs.  After being gifted a film camera, I decided to venture into the world of analog photography to mix up my workflow.

It was stressful, yet comforting knowing that the images were truly up to my thoughts at the time of capture.  Oftentimes I adjust my shooting with an edit in mind, so trying to sort my ideas at time of capture was rewarding.

My experience shooting film helped me slow down and really focus on what I was shooting.  Accepting the film stock’s imperfections created some interesting images and has given me more confidence in my digital abilities.  Great images can be made with any media regardless of sensor size, dynamic range, or megapixels.  Although I will also be a digital shooter, I plan to continue bringing film along for casual trips where the memory is more important than a perfect photograph.
